Attention all adventure seekers! It is time to grab your kites, bars and boards and literally be taken to where the wind blows you.
From September 23-26, the sleepy village of Vilanculos in southern Mozambique will again play host to the annual Vilanculo Downwind and Music Festival – a definite must on your bucket list of activities to master.
For 2016, the event will return to Kitezone and Casbar for the entire weekend, building around a 10km downwind starting on the mainland and finishing on an island or along the coast (depending on the conditions of the day).
Visitors to Vilanculos over the period of the downwind can also look forward to other highlights such as a braai beach party featuring live music and DJ’s and a tricks competition with prizes and beach activities. Confirmed entertainment include Capetonian group, Black South Easter; Tofo Groups Band with No Name, Lakalaka and DJ Vedas.
Of special interest is that besides possibly experiencing some of the best runs of your life, the event flies under the banner of ‘Kiting for the Endangered Wildlife Trust’. The initiative invites interested parties to contribute towards the conservation of the Bazaruto Archipelago’s most endangered marine mammal – the Dugong. Donations to the trust aid marine patrols in efforts to prevent Dugong entanglement in illegal fishing nets.
Should you be making your way to Vilanculos for this year’s event, do consider booking your accommodation at Casa Rex. An ideal spot from where to experience the downwind, Casa Rex offers travellers a sublime tropical experience from only R6,085 per person when booked through Dana Tours. The three-night Downwind Kite Surfing Special at the property includes accommodation in an Acacia room on a bed and breakfast basis and a one-day sailaway dhow snorkeling trip to Magarugue Island.
