If you are traveling to Mozambique soon, here is what you need to know right now.

Travellers now requiring an ETA

The following 29 countries will now need to obtain an ETA electronically: Belgium, Canada, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States.

• Requirement: You must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travel.
• Cost: The fee has increased to approximately $48 per person (previously around $10).
• Timing: Applications should be submitted at least 48 hours prior to travel.

Travellers requiring a standard visa

For nationalities not on the ETA list, the process has also changed:

• Cost: The e-Visa fee has increased to approximately $190 per person.
• Timing: Processing times are estimated at 6 to 9 business days.

Important notes on the application process

• The old platform: The previous e-visa platform has been discontinued
• Pending applications: If you applied on the old system and haven’t received a decision, do not submit a new application yet. The authorities have stated that updates will be sent to your registered email address.
• Documents: You will need to upload your flight confirmation, accommodation booking, and passport details to the new portal.

A Note from Dana Tours

We know this comes as a surprise. We were not given advance notice of these changes or the fee increases. We are currently engaging with the authorities to get clarity on the transition period, especially for guests arriving in the next few days. We are concerned about the impact these sudden cost increases and administrative hurdles will have on our guests, and we are advocating for a smoother process. In the meantime, we are here to help you navigate these new requirements.

If you’re planning a visit to Mozambique from one of 29 newly visa-exempt countries (including the UK, USA, Portugal, and others), a new travel requirement has just been introduced that you need to know about.

Effective immediately, travellers from these countries must register online at least 48 hours before departure, even though they are exempt from obtaining a traditional visa.

Important: This requirement does not apply to citizens of Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, or Namibia. If you’re travelling on a passport issued by a SADC country, no pre-registration or entry fee is required under current Mozambican immigration law.

What’s changed?

Under Decree No. 10/2023 issued by Mozambican immigration authorities:

• Travellers from 29 newly visa-exempt countries must now register online prior to arrival
• Registration must be completed at least 48 hours before departure
• A registration fee of 650 MZN (approx. USD10) applies
• Once approved, travellers receive an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which must be presented at immigration

This process applies whether you’re visiting for tourism or business purposes.

Who must register?

This regulation affects passport holders from 29 specific countries granted visa exemption in May 2023, namely:

Travellers holding passports from the following 11 SADC member states are completely exempt – no registration required:

• Mauritius
• Namibia
• South Africa
• Tanzania
• Zambia
• Zimbabwe

If you’re visiting Mozambique on a passport issued by one of these nations for tourism, you do not need a visa or this pre-registration step.

Samuel’s roots are as diverse as the Mozambican landscape. Born in Maputo City’s renowned Bairro Polana Caniço B, he hails from the Nguni Tribe (Shanghanas) with a heritage as rich and storied as the brave emperor Ngungunhane. This heritage has undoubtedly influenced his passion for promoting the beauty of Mozambique.

Samuel’s journey with Dana Tours began in 2014 as a tour guide. In August 2023, he assumed the role of HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) Officer, leveraging his prior experience in the field. He acquired his basic HSE certificate in 2019, building on the expertise gained while working alongside other skilled HSE professionals.

Samuel’s professional path has been diverse. He began as a general administrative assistant in the Telecom HSE department from 1998 to 2005. In 2009, his passion for travel and exploration led him to work as a tour guide and supervisor at Mozambique City Tours until 2011. From 2011 to 2013, he ventured into the HSE department once more, this time at Kudumba Investments, where he served as an HSE assistant and supervisor. In 2022, he took on the role of the main HSE representative at EC3 AFRICA.

Samuel’s journey was inspired by his dream to create a tourism company offering international-standard services that would showcase Mozambique as a premier tourism destination. Dana Tours has become the realization of this dream, and he takes pride in contributing to the promotion of his beautiful homeland.

Samuel’s love for traveling and meeting people from diverse backgrounds led him to undertake training as a tour guide in 2009. At 72 years of age, Macamo brings a wealth of experience and a positive attitude to his role. Hailing from Chibuto-Gaza, his commitment to his job shines through as he takes care of the office space and ensures our vehicles are clean and well-maintained. Macamo’s passion for his work is evident as he shares his enthusiasm, “I like to work at Dana Tours.” 

Family is at the core of Macamo’s life, and he takes great joy in living with his two children and grandchildren. His love for them reflects in the way he diligently takes care of his home and manages household chores, including washing clothes. 

Having been born in Gaza, the region holds a special place in Macamo’s heart, and it’s evident that fond memories and emotional connections make it all the more meaningful for him. 

When it comes to food, Macamo savors traditional Mozambican cuisine, particularly “Xima” (pap) served with “matsau” (pumpkin leaf), a classic combination that brings a nostalgic taste of home.

Next was Rio Azul in Inhassoro, by far the most exclusive and luxurious lodge of our trip. It conveyed a feeling of privacy and comfort. The staff was extremely attentive, and everything was impeccable. Even the internet was good! It is amazing how manager Mark Bennett and the team, especially the chef de cuisine, maintain the highest standards in such a remote place. The service was excellent, easygoing, and generous regarding extras (for example, they didn’t charge us for the sunset boat tour). We had dinner on the beach and lunch on an island that just appears at low tide. The overall experience was amazing!

From there, it took us 11 hours to Montebelo Gorongosa. Luckily, as advised by Natalie, we started before sunrise. The EN1 between Save and Inchope is in horrible condition. The stretch between Inchope and the turnoff to Chitengue is even worse (it took us 1,5 hours for the 40 km trip from Inchope to the turnoff and another hour on the dirt road to the park). You need a lot of patience, a healthy back, and an extremely reliable car with high road clearance for those potholes. Buffalo Camp is rather close to Save Bridge, so it came too early for a lunch break, but after Buffalo Camp, there is no café or lodge to have a cup of coffee. But the gruelling drive was more than worth it.

The landscape and animals of Gorongosa National Park are one of a kind! Montebelo Lodge was fine (clean rooms, good albeit expensive food). We loved the proximity to the science labs and pangolins. The safaris (both the walking safari and the afternoon drive) were excellent, with highly experienced and qualified guides. We skipped the coffee plantation and waterfall because of the bad road.

Ndzou Camp, about 50 km after Sussundenga, greatly enlarged our knowledge of social and tourism realities in Mozambique. Thanks to Vânia for reminding the camp of our arrival! The road from Chimoio to the camp is in good condition, easy to drive, and offers great views of Mount Binga and Chimanimani. The camp is set in the forest on a ridge which provides an enjoyable and quiet location. The huts have a great view but are extremely simple and need some renovation. Running water was not available, and neither internet. Electricity was provided by a generator in the evening hours. You need to bring cash as POS and Mpesa didn’t work. But the food was okay, the service as well, and we enjoyed the evenings around the fire. We had to use our sleeping bags; otherwise, it would have been too cold. The camp offers walking tours and elephant viewing. However, the tour guide was not equipped for close encounters with elephants. Our biggest disappointment was that the camp was located far from Chimanimani National Park, so we did not enter the Park or see the prehistoric paintings. However, we visited several community projects close to the camp. One night would have been enough, although we liked the people there, Mr. Nelson and the team.  

The 5 days at Vilanculos Beach Lodge were super enjoyable. The lodge was one of the best and most charming hotels we have experienced to date in Mozambique. Angela and her team have worked tirelessly to repair damages caused by cyclone Freddy. We loved the layout and furnishings of the rooms, they are even good for work purposes, with more than enough space and good internet. The garden and pool overlooking the beach are idyllic. Breakfast was excellent, lunch and dinner were good.  We took a boat ride to Santa Carolina, including snorkelling, and a good lunch. The hotel put us in touch with a local tour operator, and the boat was of good quality with strong engines.  

Our last stop was Liquid Dive Adventures in Tofo. We knew the place from before and liked the simplicity and relaxed vibes (as well as the diving school close at hand). We had our farewell lunch at Green Turtle in Barra. It was a perfect goodbye after an exciting journey!
