Immediately beyond the Fortaleza is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, built in 1522, which is considered to be the oldest standing European building in the southern hemisphere. This magical little church is also the only example of Manueline architecture in Mozambique, representing the relatively short but very influential period of Portuguese naval supremacy and the exorbitantly sumptuous court of King Manuel 1.

Ascend the ramparts for breath taking views and walk across the expansive rooftop water collection system.  Visit the Palace of São Paulo which has now been converted into a museum displaying exquisite furniture, carpets, Chinese porcelain, paintings and other pieces from the colonial period when Ilha was administered from Goa in India. There is also a Maritime Museum with a replica wooden boat from Vasco da Gama’s vessels.
